The important piece here is the MDA, that is, the piece of software
which actually puts the mail into the box. Depending on your
configuration it's Postfix itself, or Dovecot's deliver or even a
third-party package (e.g. Procmail).

It is this program which decides to which box the mail goes (depending
on the message, and among other things on the headers added by the spam
filter).

In my case, for example, I use procmail by having the following in my
.forward file (in my home dir)

  | exec /usr/bin/procmail

Postfix sees that when trying to deliver a mail to me and passes the
mail to procmail. This program classifies the mail according to whatever
rules I give to it into different mailboxes.

Which MDA are you using?
