Hi Jack,

Are you seeing something like this?

  [relson at osage tmp]$ bf_compact .
  mv: cannot move `.' to `..old': Device or resource busy

Given bf_compact's goal of renaming the directory to directory.old and
putting the new one in place, it seems that . shouldn't be allowed.

If you're getting a different message, what's in . and what message are
you getting?
