Perhaps you'd have more luck with QDBM or SQLite 3.0.8 (or newer)?

SunOS 4.1.4 hasn't been supported by Sun for several years now so the
usefulness of deployment on an unsupported OS is a bit moot.

It's fine as long as it works, but if a problem reveals a bug in the OS,
you might be out of luck.

I am currently not aware of issues on SunOS 4.1.4 but I haven't tested
bogofilter on the SunOS 4.1.3 machine I have access to in half an age...
