I hope I didn't start us off after a red herring, but ...

At a shell prompt, "uname -m" or "uname -p" should tell you what you're
running on, I think.  (I'm not sure what the difference between
the -m & -p options is; I get interestingly varying results on the two
different systems I have at hand.)
