The problem report is appreciated.

I think you've pinpointed the compilation issue. The change to using 
inttypes.h and uint32_t is very new.  Evidentally we need to update 
configure.ac - a task that I'll leave to Matthias.

I'll take a look at the file in a bit.  Right now I'm looking into why 
"make check" is complaining on a HP-UX/parisc system.
