Well, if spammers start using embedded images, then we can mark everything 
with embedded images as suspect.

I rarely receive legit images, and when I do, they're usually attached, not 
embedded, whereas most images in spam are currently embedded or linked.

And spammers are already doing this with linked images. I get lots of spam 
with just a few characters of text; the rest is images of some sort, 
usually just linked.
Bogofilter has been doing a good job catching most of them.

BTW, Eudora has the nice option to turn off rendering of ALL inline images, 
whether embedded or linked with <img src=...>
This has the added benefit of smashing any web bugs.
I haven't seen this option in Mozilla Mail or any other graphical MUAs.
