I am happy to see that you are heading down the path of discovery.
Make sure not to ignore 'gcov' based profiling.  Gcov produces
annotated source code which records how many times every line was
executed.  This can be quite handy to help find hot spots that can be
written more efficiently to improve performance.  Gcov is quite
helpful in finding the correct "trees" in the "forest" of output
produced by gprof.
