I don't consider unchecked mail "safe" for delivery.

Site-specific. If yo leave your system running for three weeks, then you
have to deal with the implications. If some idiot sends you some dozen 8
MB mails and runs your favourite system partition out of space, there's
nothing for you to win before some can clear up that condition.
