True to past experience, updating automake doesn't just happen.

After unpacking automake-1.7.6.tar.gz, ./configure complains that 
autoconf-2.54 or newer is needed.  "autoconf --version" reports 
2.57.  Something's wrong here :-(

I'll poke at automake-1.7.6 some more and see if I can make it happy.
