What kernel are you running?  There were some problems with 2.4.18 as shipped 
with RedHat and It may have affected the stock kernel as well.  The problems 
were specifically related to ext3 and they would cause lockups of the machine 
along with possible filesystem corruption.  (We got bit by this on some of 
our database servers at work... icky).
