catastrophic recovery required

Further information on this:

My use of "run of bogofilter" wasn't really clear or accurate.  I meant
an instance where I have multiple messages tagged in Mutt, then pipe
them all through 'bogofilter -Ns'.

I've since realised that it's specific messages causing the problem.
Here's a (hopefully more informative) session:

I've backed up the $HOME/.bogofilter/ directory, and the problematic
message, for further forensics if that helps.
