Hi Richard,
0.16.2 does have a problem, but only with the "-u" command line option,
which requires an option. That's been fixed with 0.16.3 which is
available from sourceforge.net or my site
ftp://ftp.osagesoftware.com/pub/outgoing/bogofilter/0.16.3/.
The one byte file is something I've not heard of before. Let me know
what you learn ...
