Isn't .MSG_COUNT updated every time a -NnSs operation is done?  So if
you set the -a date that's younger than the .MSG_COUNT date, shouldn't
all the tokens in there evaporate as well?

Course it doesn't hurt to keep .MSG_COUNT intact.
