Good job in tracking down the problem.  When I'm looking for problems
with \r and \n characters, I use emacs or hd (hexdump).  

Emacs will indicate "(DOS mode)" if every line has a \r\n pair.   Else
it uses ^M do indicate extra \r chars, as in your case:

  Subject: RE: ATM Cashless Business^M

When I really want to see the bytes, hd (hexdump) shows them to me, as
in:
