Welcome Don,

Dotfiles are not necessary.  They're useful for private files, but
bogofilters files can be most anywhere.

Put the config file in /etc/bogofilter.cf, which is one of the standard
places that bogofilter will look for it.  In it have a
"bogofilter_dir=/your/bogofilter/wordlist/directory/" directive.  I use
/var/lib/bogofilter for holding my wordlist.db

Alternatively your bogofilter command line can include 

"-c /path/to/configfile -d /your/bogofilter/wordlist/directory"
