Peter,

Both of your findings are correct.  The RFC specifies CRLF as line 
terminators.  The CR is removed before bogofilter sees the message in many 
environments, but not all.  Consequently bogofilter is smart enough to 
handle either.

"^From " is the regexp pattern for mbox message separators.  Anything else 
is allowed on the remainder of the line.
