No, that's not mutt's standard behaviour. I suppose you have

    set pipe_decode=yes

in your muttrc.

From the manual:

| 6.3.154.  pipe_decode
|
|   Type: boolean
|   Default: no
|
|   Used in connection with the pipe-message command.  When unset, Mutt
|   will pipe the messages without any preprocessing. When set, Mutt will
|   weed headers and will attempt to PGP/MIME decode the messages first.


The macros are working fine with mutt's default settings.
