If that was it, automake 1.7.2 (that I use to package thinks for
testing, "make distdir") would be broken and my "magic" would try to
rebuild the .1in file, too.

"make -dmd" reveals that make doesn't try a VPATH search for .1in --
.1in is "not found" (and therefore considered out of date).  I assume
this is because the .1in is an output of the .xml.1in suffix
transformation rule and make doesn't expect it in VPATH. :-|
