Mike,

As Chris showed, scripting was necessary with the older versions.  The
reader reorganization and rewrite makes it easy for bogofilter to handle
mbox, Maildir, and MH folder as its primary formats.  Minor changes
since then have added rmail and ANT message formats.

Sounds like you have a very good reason to upgrade:-)

If you haven't converted from the separate spam and good wordlists, now
is also the time to run bogoupgrade and switch to a single combined
wordlist.
