Chris,
Welcome to the bogofilter mailing list.
bogoupgrade is pretty much obsolete. It was needed some months ago when
the database format underwent a radical change. It's only needed if you
built wordlists using bogofilter version 0.7 (or older).
Bogofilter's effectiveness depends on two factors: how well it's trained
and how closely incoming spam resembles the messages used to train the program.
From your description, I'd guess that the spam you're now receiving is
different from the spam you used to receive. The thing to do is make sure
bogofilter gets trained on any and all messages that it classifies wrong.
Is it possible that you've accidentally registered spam as ham (or vice
versa)? That will reduce bogofilter's effectiveness if it happens.
If you're curious how/why bogofilter is classifying a message is ham or
spam, try running it manually and use option "-vv" to generate a histogram
or use option "-vvv" to generate a list of the message's tokens and their
good/bad counts and spam scores. bogofilter-faq.html describes the "-vvv"
output is greater detail.
You can also use bogoutil's "-w" or "-p" options to see the counts and
scores for words that are of interest.
There are some cleanups in bogofilter 0.11.1.7 which was released this
morning. In particular bogoutil's -p option has been changed.
I'll change the UPGRADE file to correctly reflect bogoupgrade's name and
that'll be in 0.11.1.8 (likely later today).
Keep us posted on your progress.
Cheers,
David
