There _is_ a configure script and you should have gotten it.  Sounds like 
somethng went wrong with the checkout.  Try doing a "cvs update" ...

So you must have discovered the other files it needed, like datastore_db.c, 
xmalloc.c, and xstrdup.c and the BerkeleyDB library.  Well done !
