Clint,

The test failure involves the following line:

  for msg in "$SYSTEST/inputs/"msg.?.txt ; do

in src/tests/t.grftest.  Since dash-0.5.3-7 handles this fine and
dash-0.5.4-7 has trouble with it this seems like a globbing defect in
the new version of dash.
