I forgot to mention that if I run t.lock3 with only 1 instance  
(thereby not testing anything but single instance speed) the test  
finishes in about 4 seconds:

$ time make check TESTS=t.lock3

PASS: t.lock3
==================
All 1 tests passed
==================

real    0m3.853s
user    0m1.882s
sys     0m0.620s
