The guest kernel is 2.4.26-linode31-1um.  I believe the linode
modification is just some IO throttling patches.  The host kernel
appears to be 2.6.7-1-bigmem SMP.  I don't have any control over the
host machine itself; I'm running this under an account that I have at
linode.com.  Thanks for your help.
