"diff -u" is used in two ways. The first is in the test itself. Since
we're providing reference outputs, any flavor of diff is acceptable - so
long as the output is the same of the original and test machines. That's
where the "-u" matters most. The other use is with the "-v" (verbose)
switch and is for people who want to see what really went wrong. I just
threw in the "if linux" bit as a convenience. Anybody who really cares
about the test outputs is likely to tweak the scripts for their personal
convenience.
We could change my "if linux" test, but it's not really necessary.
